Visiting Chambord Castle at Christmas: A Fairytale Experience in the Loire Valley

You may have already visited Chambord Castle or are dreaming of discovering it for the first time. Christmas is an incredible time when the castle takes on a whole new dimension and transports you into a truly magical world! From beautifully decorated Christmas trees to enchanting outdoor lights, experience the magic of Christmas like never before!

Chambord Castle was built starting in 1519 under King Francis I. Its main feature is the central staircase — a double-helix design where people ascending and descending never meet but can see each other through small openings. Its beautifully crafted roofs, elegant exterior staircases, and classic French gardens also contribute to its worldwide fame.

Many guided tours are available in different formats, allowing you to explore the castle in more or less detail depending on your chosen experience. For all of them (except the HistoPad tour), it is highly recommended to book well in advance on the official Chambord website:

  • Guided Tour – 1h30 – Adults €7

  • Guided Tour – 3h – Adults €12

This extended tour gives you access to areas normally closed to the public, such as the attic spaces.

  • HistoPad – Interactive Tablet Tour – Adults €6.50

At Christmas, additional guided tours are offered to uncover all the secrets of Christmas traditions throughout the ages.

Many rooms in the castle are beautifully decorated with Christmas trees and wreaths. For children, it’s also the perfect time to discover the castle, with a variety of activities included in the entrance ticket and suitable for all ages: chocolate painting, storytelling by the Christmas tree, armored knight battles, and even a visit from Santa Claus!

Night falls early, but that only adds to the magic, giving you the chance to admire the beautifully decorated exteriors as well. We can only highly recommend this visit!

Where to Stay for Easy Access to Chambord Castle?

In high season, it’s easy to reach Chambord from most nearby towns thanks to shuttle services. In winter, however, renting a car is a better option to get to the castle. You can easily rent one through Getaround and pick it up independently in city centers or train stations.
