Located between Pacific Rim National Park and Clayoquot Sound, Tofino is a well-known destination for surfers. To fully experience a visit to Tofino, you simply can’t leave the town without having “caught a wave.”

Are you a beginner? No worries—there’s something for every skill level here. We had never surfed before going to Tofino, but we couldn’t resist those stunning landscapes! We absolutely loved it, even though, as beginners, we spent more time in the water than standing on our boards. On top of that—and no one will argue—surfing in Canada isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about traveling in this country, especially knowing you'll be sharing the water with whales and seals.
There’s no shortage of surf schools in Tofino, but it’s best to book ahead to make sure you get a spot. We recommend Tofino Surf School, with whom we had a fantastic time! A warm welcome from Rafa and professional, kind guidance from our instructor Stan helped us progress quickly. Tofino Surf School offers group lessons (max 6 people per session) or private lessons.

We took a group lesson for $99 CAD per person for a 3-hour class. There were only 4 of us and it was amazing!
What’s a surf lesson like with Tofino Surf School?
To start, you head to the surf school located in downtown Tofino (381 Main Street, Tofino // BC, V0R 2Z0) to pick up your gear, which will have been prepared based on the information you provided when booking (neoprene boots, thick wetsuit, and the school's yellow T-shirt).
Next, you’ll drive to the beach specified by the school, using your own vehicle. If you don’t have one, just let the school know when booking and they’ll offer an alternative. You’ll put on your gear in the parking lot, where your instructor will meet you with the boards.
We surfed at Cox Bay Beach, a gorgeous cove with fine sand, clear water, and most importantly, perfect waves for beginners.

Our instructor, Stan—who’s originally from England—first explained on the beach how to catch waves, how to position ourselves on the board, and where to place our feet. We first practiced on the sand, and let’s just say it wasn’t a guaranteed success! He gave each of us individual advice until we got the basic movements down outside the water. We also spent some necessary time reviewing safety instructions, especially regarding the currents that are present on all coastal beaches. If you decide to try surfing without taking a lesson, we recommend carefully reading the signs at the beach entrance that warn surfers about the currents.
Once in the water, Stan spent one-on-one time with each of us to give additional tips so we could succeed in catching our waves. We really appreciated his patience and teaching skills, which helped us improve much faster than we expected.

When we decided to surf in Canada, we were worried about being cold after spending 3 hours in the water—but that wasn’t the case at all! The gear provided by Tofino Surf School was really high quality! Even with water temperatures between 10°C and 13°C, we felt totally comfortable in the water.
We also had two magical moments: the instructor spotted a whale in the distance, and a seal came to visit me while I was on my board. An encounter I won’t forget anytime soon!
Why choose Tofino Surf School?
Although we didn’t try the other surf schools in town, you can choose Tofino Surf School with your eyes closed, and we guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

A warm welcome from Rafa at the Tofino Surf School office, who also speaks French and will explain how everything works. Don’t hesitate to ask her any questions.
